State Requirements for Interstate Transport of Oversize Loads

  • 5’ x 10” (7’ x 18” in LA)  (6’ x 1’ in NJ) Oversize Load sign; Roof Mounted w/ 10” of vertical visibility or no more than a 45° (degree) angle. With  min. lettering height of 8” (10” x  1⅝” brush stroke in LA).  Roof mounted signs are Req. in: CT (sign must be min. 48” above roadway).(MN – for night moves ALL signs must be lighted and a min. of 5’ above road surface)
  • Vehicle must have a min. 95” wheelbase (100” in NYS)
  • Vehicle cannot weigh more than 12,000# (10,000# in NYS).
  • (2) 6” dia. Lights (min. 60 rpm) mounted on either side of sign. Min. Class 2
  • (NYS)Light bar (manufactured as one piece) min. of  43” and a max. of 52” Long, min. 10” and a max. 13” Wide,   and a min. 4”, max. 8” High.Consisting a min. of 4 lights (flashing or strobe – Cannot use BOTH). If flashing lights are used they shall consist of at least 2, 95 and 2, 150 min. FPM rotators
  • (NYS) Proper Insignia as mandated by the NYDOT.   2 insignias per car, one on the driver’s side DOOR and on the FRONT passenger’s side DOOR
  • Placards or signs showing the name of the company or the owner or driver of the escort vehicle must be placed on BOTH the right and left sides of the escort vehicle. The signs shall be at least 8” x 12” and shall contain the name and telephone number of the owner or driver.
  • (2) 5# (FL), AND (1) 10#   Class 5 (NY) or larger BC rated Fire Extinguisher
  • (4)  20”x 20” Red/Orange Flags mounted on the bumper at all four corners of the vehicle
  • (2) 20” x 20” Red/Orange Flags mounted on the extremes of the light bar and/or rotators, and/or roof top sign. NOT to exceed a max. 8’ in overall width
  • Good working, reliable CB radio and antenna
  • 24” Stop & Slow paddle
  • (9) Reflective Triangles, (8) Red burning Flares, or approved alternative
  • (3) 18” high Orange Cones (FL requires 36″ reflective cones)
  • 9” min. length Orange cone for the end of Flashlight
  • Flashlight w/ min. 1 ½” lens dia., w/ extra batteries or charger
  • Orange Hard Hat
  • Min. Class 2 Orange Safety Vest. ( w/ NYS Cert. Esc. Patch on LEFT chest in NY)
  • First Aid Kit, marked as a First Aid Kit
  • (2) Spare Oversize Load signs 7’ x 18”
  • Hand Held Radio
  • Spare Tire, Tire Jack, Lug Wrench
  • Cellular Telephone
  • (2) 18” x  18” Red or Orange Flags on staffs
  • (1) 18” x 18”  Red or Orange Flag on a staff at least 36” long and should be weighted at the bottom w/ a 3/16” dowel, rod or some other adequate weight
  • IF Operating a High Pole. Pole should be easy to set measurements accurately, Non-Conductive, Non-Destructive, and easy to read. Ie. Use a bright colored stinger, w/ a ribbon, etc
